Lovely Stiff Fabrics
By Emi
Unlike Taffeta, Horse hair fabric is used to stiffen skirts and trains. It's often used in crinolines, fanning out when pleated and stacked.
Some stiff fabrics are used as the overlay of a gown. Good for draping, prone to water staining, and lovely for showing off the figure.
Taffeta
Taffeta is a stiff fabric that can be made of polyester or silk. Its unique stiffness and sheen is created by weaving red thread (picture as example) and stiff metallic thread.

See ya'll next time! You can see the chemise that is going with my ball gown, and all of the lace I am hand stitching on! 1890's sewing techniques and everything...

ReplyDeleteIs a metallic thread made of real metal? Is that kind of fabric a recent invention? Or have people been able to make metal thread for a long time? What is water staining? That sounds like a bad thing. Like, if you get water on your dress, then it will leave a permanent water spot. Or is it something you do intentionally to change the color of the fabric?
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't know, NO, when water stains fabric like oil, and is TERRIBLE.
